Sharing Your Story

If You Build it, They Will Come: A well-built calendar of fun activities and adventures will attract Scouts and their families – BUT ONLY IF THEY KNOW ABOUT IT!!! 

Reaching & Attracting New Families to Scouting:

  • At/through School
    • Flyers, Posters, Peachjar, eblasts, newsletters, yard signs, marquee, website, PTA presentations
    • Booth at Back-to-School Night (aka Open House, Meet the Teacher)  
    • School Service Projects
  • Social Media
    • Unit Facebook page (event)
    • Next Door
    • Instagram
  • Peer-to-Peer
    • Parents (social media, texts, conversations, personal invitations)
    • Scouts (buddy cards, uniform day at School)
  • Community Events
    • Pool parties, Field Day at the Park, Booth/Activity at community gatherings
    • Adopt-a-Spot
  • Posters displayed
    • In Churches (Chartering Org)
    • At Local Parks, Pools, sporting events, Rec Centers
    • Local Businesses (convenience stores, restaurants, pediatricians’ office, orthodontist’s office)
  • Yard Signs
    • At schools

    • In members (and former members) yards
    • At Prime intersections
  • Local Media
    • Newspaper
    • Community Access channel
    • Talk Radio
    • Early Morning TV

Joining Events:

  • Location
    • Hold them at your School (if possible)
    • Church
    • Local Park
  • Timing
    • 10 days – 2 weeks after the start of School (allows time to promote)
    • 6:30 or 7:00pm starts work best
  • Format
    • Organized Sit-down events work best (open houses are ok)
    • Have an activity (and manpower) to entertain the youth in a separate space
  • Content
    • Keep it Simple
    • Tell them what Scouting is
    • Give them your Calendar
    • Tell them what their role is
    • Help them complete the paperwork (collect it that night)
  • Second Chance Events
    • Give potential Scouts/families a second opportunity to join: at a FUN Pack meeting, at a Pack event, as a go-see-it (Fire Department, Police Station, etc)
